Rab Shields is a fitness trainer from Scotland with over two decades’ of expertise. His philosophy is founded upon the fitness fundamentals of forming positive habits, prioritising progression over pace, and – most importantly - having fun! Taken together, these tenets build a foundation for fitness and lifestyle improvement that delivers sustainable, long-term changes. Rab’s approach to health and wellness is grounded in his passion for helping clients identify their specific goals, and creating a training environment that enables the achievement of those goals.
In the early part of his career, Rab worked at the world-renowned Old Course hotel in St Andrews, during which time he trained a host of celebrity clientele. In 2008, he started his own personal training business, working mainly in gyms and other conventional fitness settings across Scotland.

Between 2015 and 2022, Rab co-founded and developed The Kilted Coaches, a personal training platform which advocated for expanding fitness beyond the walls of a gym, and emphasised the importance of embracing gradual lifestyle changes in pursuit of a healthier mind and body. During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Kilted Coaches’ membership soared, gaining widespread acclaim as they shared training strategies on social media which offered a holistic approach to health. Their outdoor workout videos not only showcased the beauty of the Scottish Highlands but demonstrated how, even with small changes, exercise could be incorporated into a daily routine.
Layering solid fitness principles alongside humour and inclusivity, The Kilted Coaches developed into a successful and relatable Scottish fitness brand, leading to an appearance on Home Sweet Home with Joanna Lumley, work in television and radio media, and even a book.
Most notably, in 2019, Rab co-presented and co-coached on the BBC series, Secret Body. The series followed a selection of Scots as they embarked upon a transformative health journey to build sustainable nutritional and exercise habits, championed all the while by The Kilted Coaches’ energy, enthusiasm and experience.

Now in his forties, Rab has refocused his training techniques to address and support health issues specific to middle age. He has completed courses in menopause fitness, alkaline nutrition and Pilates, in order to supplement his existing professional specialities in weightloss, strength gain, and injury rehabilitation. Additionally, Rab’s training system centres the importance of stress management as integral to overall wellness.
